Halifax neighbourhood evacuation ends after unstable crane repaired overnight

HALIFAX — Residents of a Halifax neighbourhood have been cleared to return home after concerns over the stability of a construction crane led to an evacuation Thursday night.

Shortly after 5 p.m. emergency officials were called to assess the crane at 3644 Dutch Village Road in the Fairview neighbourhood.

Surrounding streets were closed and about 100 people were evacuated from the area.

Police say 18 people from 10 homes registered with the Canadian Red Cross and spent the night at a local community centre.

By 7:30 p.m. officials said the scene was secured and considered safe, with a repair plan underway.

Streets in the area were reopened around 5 a.m. with the repair complete.
