Terrible week for Democrats

Iowa.

The American Heartland.

The Hawkeye State.

Over 3 million inhabitants.

And the first stop on the road to the Presidential election since 1972.

It shouldn’t really be that way.  Iowa is not on most people’s radar.  But ever since a little-known Southern Governor, Jimmy Carter, won the Democratic Iowa caucus and rode it all the way to the White House, Iowa is kind of a big deal.

And so the stage was set for the showdown between the hopefuls.

But it was not to be.

The U.S. Democrats had a disastrous evening in Iowa.  No results.  Confusion for hours.  Party officials issuing meaningless statements about “quality checks” and whatnot.  Helpless news network filling the air about nothing and anything.

Peaked absurdity was reached when CNN’s Wolf Blitzer was interviewing the caucus secretary for Story County Precinct 1-1, Shawn Sebasting.  He had been on hold for 90 minutes to report the results to the Democratic Party.  Suddenly, while being on live TV, they were on the line.  Alas, he failed to pivot from his interview to the line and they hung up on him.

Dispirited participants ended up leaving the caucuses wondering what is wrong with their party.  After all, the Caucuses were supposed to be the dramatic first step towards getting rid of Donald Trump as president.

Instead, Trump wins, and he wins big.

Not only did he get 97 % of the vote in the Republican primary and all 38 delegates, none of his potential democratic opponents could truly celebrate what happened.

Bernie Sanders. Elizabeth Warren.  Pete Buttigieg.  Amy Klobuchar.  Joe Biden.  Andrew Yang.  Tom Steyer.  Michael Bloomberg.  Tulsi Gabbard.  Michael Bennet.  Deval Patrick.

Some of them came out to speak, claim victory, thank supporters.  It was all very strange and it was also very late.  Most voters had gone to bed, with one thought lingering in their mind.

“If the Democrats can’t manage their own Iowa Caucuses, how can they manage the White House?”

Tonight, Donald Trump will be alone on the dance floor and will deliver the State of the Union.  Tomorrow, Trump will be acquitted in his impeachment trial in the Senate.

This is definitely not a good week for the Democrats.

On the way towards the 2020 elections, Trump couldn’t hope for a better scenario.
