MONTREAL — Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette will put her election campaign on hold to convene a cabinet meeting Monday, one day before Canadian retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods are set to take effect.

Fréchette’s office confirms that the cabinet meeting will be held virtually at 6 p.m. tomorrow, but the agenda for cabinet meetings is not disclosed in advance.

The tariffs will range from 15 to 50 per cent and will apply to products including dairy, steel and copper.

They are in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 50 per cent tariffs on $28 billion worth of Canadian goods.

Reacting to the news early this morning, Fréchette’s political opponents accuse Fréchette of using the tariff dispute for political gain during the election campaign.

Québec solidaire co-spokesperson Ruba Ghazal says Fréchette remains premier, but called on her to explain how she plans to help workers affected by the tariffs.
