Quebec minister Guilbault will leave politics at the end of her term

QUÉBEC — Quebec Municipal Affairs Minister Geneviève Guilbault will announce today that she will be leaving politics at the end of her term.

She has called a press conference in her electoral district of Louis-Hébert, in Quebec City, at 11 a.m.

Guilbault is giving up her chance to succeed Quebec premier and Coalition Avenir Québec leader François Legault.

According to information obtained by The Canadian Press, she decided some time ago that she was stepping away for family reasons.

A key figure in the CAQ for the last eight years, Guilbault served as deputy premier of Quebec from 2022 to 2025.

Her star dimmed after the SAAQclic cost-overrun scandal.

First elected in a 2017 byelection, she was re-elected in 2018 and 2022.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 18, 2026.
