FREDERICTON — The New Brunswick government says Carleton AgriSolutions Inc. will take over the province’s large animal veterinary services beginning next spring.

A news release says the company based in Hartland, N.B., has signed an agreement with provincial veterinarians to provide large-animal field veterinary services throughout New Brunswick.

Carleton AgriSolutions says it wants to fill the gap left after the provincial government stops its public veterinary service.

New Brunswick’s Liberal government previously announced that it will cut its public veterinarian service at the end of March 2027, partly as a cost-saving measure.

Critics have said the roughly $4 million in savings isn’t enough to justify scrapping the program.

However, the province says it will contribute $1.2 million toward veterinarian travel costs through a new program starting next April.

New Brunswick Cattle Producers chair Trevor Welch says he’s pleased a company operated by farmers who are familiar with the industry is taking on the veterinary services.
