OTTAWA — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says on social media he is flying to Canada today for his first visit to the country this year.

Zelenskyy’s office has not publicly announced where he will be travelling in Canada, and neither has Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office.

Carney visited Kyiv a year ago, while Zelenskyy last visited Canada in Halifax last December amid ongoing efforts to end the war Russia started in 2014 and expanded in 2022.

Canada is among the leading donors to Ukraine, though there has not been a major funding announcement from Ottawa this summer.

Zelenskyy’s visit comes as Kyiv copes with devastating airstrikes and as his government pleads for more air defence support.

European leaders argue Russia has been widening its war through acts of sabotage such as flying drones near airports and paying youths to vandalize railways.
