Nova Scotia Speaker working to identify, ban some protesters who disrupted vote

HALIFAX — The Speaker of the Nova Scotia legislature says she doesn’t know when the building will reopen to the public after protesters disrupted a budget-related vote last week.

Danielle Barkhouse says her staff are trying to identify and ban some protesters who sang songs and shouted at elected members from the gallery on March 24.

Because of the protest Barkhouse delayed the budget-related vote that evening and the legislature has been closed to the public since the following morning.

The Speaker says some of the protesters later blocked an elected member from leaving the parking lot.

Protesters were trying to stop the budget-related bill from passing because it included a series of cuts to government programs.

That vote passed the following day.
