Newfoundland and Labrador Liberals are seeking election recounts in three districts

ST. JOHN’S — Newfoundland and Labrador’s Liberal party has asked for judicial recounts in three districts where Progressive Conservative candidates won by slim margins.

The party has applied to the province’s Supreme Court for a recount in the Topsail–Paradise and Placentia West–Bellevue districts, where Liberal candidates lost by 102 and 64 votes, respectively.

Liberal Derek Bennett said Friday he had asked the court for a recount in his Lewisporte–Twilingate district, where he lost to Progressive Conservative Mark Butt by just 18 votes.

In a news release, the Liberals say judicial recounts in these district will ensure every vote was properly counted in accordance with legislation.

The province’s election laws require automatic judicial recounts in districts with a margin of victory of 10 votes or less.

The Progressive Conservatives won 21 of 40 seats in the Oct. 14 election, netting the party a slim majority over the incumbent Liberals, who won 15 seats.
