Defeated Manitoba Tory leadership candidate wants to win seat in byelection

WINNIPEG — Wally Daudrich, who was recently defeated in the race to lead Manitoba’s Opposition Progressive Conservatives, says he still plans on seeking the party’s nomination to run in a byelection.

The hotel owner and longtime party board member says he hopes to run uncontested in the Spruce Woods constituency.

The riding was previously represented by Grant Jackson, who resigned and was elected a Tory member of Parliament in Monday’s federal election.

The byelection has not yet been called.

Daudrich says he’s done some research about the riding and has spoken to many members in the area.

He narrowly lost the party leadership last weekend to Obby Khan, a former cabinet minister and pro football player.

Khan secured the support of many caucus members for his leadership bid and promoted himself as a big-tent conservative who could grow party support.

Daudrich says he accepts the results and supports Khan as leader.
